When I was 31, we really wanted to have children. I was a bit worried about whether it would work out. If you have to go through a fertility process, you could easily be 5 years down the line. Luckily for us, it happened quite quickly, and three months later, I was pregnant. Because it seems so awful when it doesn’t work out, I really wanted to participate in Moeders voor Moeders to help other women.
I thought it was a wonderful initiative and knew right away, if I ever got pregnant, I would definitely participate
I first learned about Moeders voor Moeders through a friend who had been pregnant six years earlier and had participated. One day, I was visiting her, and she went to the toilet with a little jug. I wondered what she was doing, and that’s when she told me about Moeders voor Moeders. I thought it was a wonderful initiative and knew right away—if I ever got pregnant, I would definitely participate. Six years later, when I became pregnant and visited the midwife, they asked if I was open to participating and if Moeders voor Moeders could contact me. I was definitely open to it! I appreciated that they asked me personally and not through email. You’re more likely to decline when it’s through email.
The contact with Moeders voor Moeders was very pleasant. I started around eight weeks into my pregnancy. We had already told people close to us that I was pregnant. We had done this on purpose because, if things went wrong, we would also want to share that sadness. Moeders voor Moeders kindly offered the option of using a discreet bag or placing the crates in a ‘hidden’ spot, but that wasn’t necessary for us. I think it’s important and wonderful that you can help other women become pregnant. It’s not much work and only for a short period. Since it’s early in the pregnancy, your belly isn’t big yet, so it’s very manageable. I can’t think of a reason why anyone wouldn’t participate!
