Donors

In 2023, 164,487 children were born in the Netherlands. Every year, about 1 in 10 pregnant women donate their urine to Moeders voor Moeders. Throughout the year, this means that AMP Group, the transport company we collaborate with, visits between 2,000 and 3,000 donors each week to collect the urine. Discretion is a high priority for both us and AMP. To ensure the logistical process runs smoothly, the urine collection is handled by a select group of dedicated couriers.

Urine donation can take place between the 6th and 16th week of pregnancy. On average, a donor collects her urine for eight weeks and donates around 40 litres of urine during her participation. We are often asked how many hopeful parents one donor helps through her participation. However, this question is difficult to answer. There are multiple variables involved from the donation of urine to the fertility treatment itself. For example, not everyone produces the same amount of hCG, and the amount of hCG varies by pregnancy week.

Additionally, not every donor collects the same amount of urine, and the outdoor temperature also plays a significant role in the preservation of the hCG. As a result, we see slight differences in the yield during the purification process at the factory. Finally, different amounts of hCG medication are used in different fertility treatments, and the number of treatments required to achieve pregnancy varies. Taking all these factors into account, we estimate that one litre of urine contains enough hCG for one fertility treatment, but this is truly a rough estimate.
